While traveling in New Hampshire, President George Q. Cannon encountered a man in a wagon. Both stopped simultaneously and instantly recognized each other as Latter-day Saints, despite never having met. Cannon identified the man as Solomon Mack, a cousin of the Prophet Joseph Smith, a revelation he attributed to the Spirit.
In Their Own Words
“I remember once, while traveling in New Hampshire, I saw a man in a wagon coming towards me. As we met we both stopped simultaneously. He said, “Are you not an Elder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?” I said, “Yes; are you not Solomon Mack?” He said he was. He was a cousin of the Prophet’s. I had never seen him and he had never seen me up to that time, but we recognized each other as Latter-day Saints. I knew, of course, that the Macks lived in that part of the country; but I had no idea, only as the Spirit revealed it to me, that he was Solomon Mack. It was a very singular circumstance, and it made a deep impression upon my mind at the time, as it was a direct manifestation of the Spirit of the Lord to me, and I have no doubt it was the same to him.”
