While traveling from Tifitifi to Apia during the Samoan war, George H. Blood encountered a village on fire and was subsequently surrounded by 400 Mataafa warriors who had been ordered to kill all white people found. After being threatened with death by warriors brandishing knives and leveling guns at him, one warrior discovered a tract in his pocket and identified him as a 'Mormon missionary,' which led to his safety.
In Their Own Words
“About eight miles from Apia I was met by 400 Mataafa warriors, painted and well armed. They had been ordered to kill all the whites they could find. Forty or fifty of them flocked around me, brandishing their knives. They were about to take my head off, when one of them saw a book in my coat pocket, which he took, but when he saw it was a tract he said faifean, which means 'missionary,' and I told them 'Yes, a Mormon missionary,' and found myself breathing easier. They then asked me where I was going, and I told them to Apia. They said it was not safe for me to go there, as the Mataafa men were all around the town, and would kill me. I told them I was not afraid, as I was a servant of the Lord, and He would protect me. They then let me go, and I walked right through the lines of the warriors, and reached Apia in safety, without being molested by any of them.”
