While traveling to Europe to fulfill missionary calls, Frank Thatcher, Robert Anderson, and Winslow Farr were riding on a train that collided with a freight train. The crash was violent enough to cut two train cars in two, killing one railroad man and severely injuring a fireman. Despite the severity of the wreck, the three Elders were standing near the tracks and escaped without any injury.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 59, No. 15, 15 April 1897, p. 235):

Elders Frank Thatcher, Robert Anderson and Winslow Farr, who left Salt Lake City on the 17th of March, for the European mission, had a narrow escape from death on the 20th of March, at Green River, Wyoming. The train on which they were traveling collided with a freight train, the force of the impact being so great that two of the cars were cut in two. One railroad man was killed and a fireman was severely injured, but the Elders, who were standing near the track, escaped without a scratch.

In Their Own Words

“The train upon which he was riding home-ward was blockaded by a wreck near Green River bridge, and while waiting, Mr. Barber walked forward a mile to see what it was. Imagine his surprise to find Frank Thatcher, Robt. Anderson and Winslow Farr standing near the tracks 'just out of the wreck.' Neither of the boys was hurt, but the passenger train upon which they were riding had crashed into a freight train and cut two cars in two. A fireman had both legs cut off, and one railroad man was killed. To say the boys escaped luckily, is expressing it in the mildest terms. — Millennial Star 59:15”
