A young girl of three, after kissing her father, noticed his mouth did not taste sweet like her mother's, which he realized was due to his use of tobacco and liquor. Overcome with guilt for polluting his daughter's innocent lips, he made a vow before his wife and God to abandon both substances, thanking Heaven for his daughter's influence in opening his eyes.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68, No. 38 (September 20, 1906), page 608):
A little girl of three years, after kissing her father, noticed that his mouth did not taste sweet like her mother's. She asked him why. He realized it was the tobacco and liquor. He felt a pang of guilt for polluting the innocent lips of his child. He called his wife and said: 'Come here, dear wife and mother, And help me take this vow; Neither liquor nor tobacco Shall touch my lips from now. And oh, dear Heavenly Father, Thou who art good and wise, I thank Thee for this angel Who has opened my blind eyes.' He kept his vow.
