While missionarying in Virginia in 1904, Elders A. F. Jeppson and his companion were accosted by a man who unleashed dogs and eventually pursued them with a gun. The man fired at them, but they remained unhit, with the bullets lodging in nearby trees. The Elders felt divine protection throughout their work in that neighborhood.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
Elder A. F. Jeppson, writing from Bagley's Mills, Virginia, June 27, 1904, says: 'We are having a good time in our missionary work. We have been treated very kindly by the people in this part of the country, with one exception. A man who lives near here, and who is very much opposed to the truth, has been trying to do us harm. A few days ago he came to where we were, and brought with him two large dogs, which he set upon us. We did not run, but stood our ground, and the dogs did not bite us. He then went home and got his gun, and came back to where we were. We came in open view of him and he shot at us once. Neither of us was hit, but the shot lodged in the trees. We then went into another grove of pines and he did not follow us any further, as we were nearing another farm. We feel that the Lord protected us, and we are not afraid to continue our work. The protection of the Lord was made manifest several times, and we knew that we had Him for our support; therefore doubt did not rule in us in our work, but the Spirit of the Lord.'
In Their Own Words
“We came in open view of him and he shot at us once. Neither of us, was hit, but the shot lodged in the trees We then went into another grove of pines and he did not follow us any further,as we were nearing another farm. ... The protection of the Lord was made manifest several times, and we knew that we had Him for our support ; therefore doubt did not rule in us in our work, but the Spirit of the Lord. — Millennial Star 66:29”
