Erastus Snow — Divine Guidance and the Lost Coat
Published August 30, 2026 at 11:38 PM
On July 21, 1847, Erastus Snow and Orson Pratt were the first two pioneers of the vanguard company to enter the Salt Lake Valley. Snow recorded that he accidentally lost his coat while riding. Despite the vastness of the valley, he felt a spiritual prompting to return along a specific route, where he found the coat lying in the grass. He viewed this as a divine providence for the poorly equipped pioneers and a confirmation of the Spirit's presence in the new land.
