Ephraim Hanks Heals Thomas Dobson’s Frozen Feet and Dying Illness Near Fort Bridger—Dobson Rises, Sings, and Dances (1856)
Published September 28, 2026 at 5:51 AM
During the 1856 rescue efforts near Fort Bridger, nineteen-year-old Thomas Dobson of the Martin Handcart Company was suffering severely after crossing much of the plains without shoes. His mother, Alice Pickup Dobson, asked Ephraim Knowlton Hanks to administer to him. Dobson’s big toes were badly frozen, his feet had swollen so much that shoes would not fit, and his companions expected him to die that night. Hanks wrapped Dobson’s feet in cotton and promised him that they would be made whole if he stood, sang the handcart song, and believed Hanks’s words. Hanks administered to him, and Dobson was immediately healed: he rose, dressed himself, and, when a fiddling and dancing began in camp after a couple married, sang and danced a hornpipe on the inboard of a wagon Hanks procured. Dobson survived the trek, later crossed the plains again as a Pony Express rider, served a mission to England, and lived to recount the experience in the 1906 and 1907 Deseret News accounts of handcart veterans.
In Their Own Words
“I wore out my shoes on the way, and had to make a good many miles of it on foot. My feet froze and it was no small task hobbling over the rough roads wheeling a handcart. Brother Eph Hanks promised me the first pair of shoes that came to camp. But my feet had swollen so that nothing would fit them. 'Tommy,' says Eph, 'it's too bad; but there's no shoes for you; and the best I can do is to wrap you up in this piece of cotton. Now, I tell you what you do. Stand up and sing the handcart song and I promise you in the name of Israel's God your feet shall be made whole.' That night I was wakened by a sound of fiddling. A couple in our company got married and the camp was celebrating with a dance. I was lying in the wagon, but when that man told me to dance I got out there and danced as I never had before. That was the last of my lame feet.”
