In the summer of 1844, following the martyrdom of Joseph Smith, a period of profound uncertainty gripped the Saints in Nauvoo. As Sidney Rigdon campaigned for leadership, claiming the role of 'guardian' of the Church, a pivotal meeting was held on August 8, 1844, to determine the Church's future leadership. During the proceedings, Brigham Young, President of the Quorum of the Twelve, addressed the assembly to clarify the order of the Priesthood and the authority of the Apostles. Enoch Burns, who was present, reported a powerful spiritual manifestation during this meeting: as Brigham Young spoke, the mantle of the Prophet Joseph Smith appeared to fall upon him. Burns testified that Young's voice, mannerisms, and very appearance were so strikingly similar to those of the late Prophet that, had Burns not known Joseph Smith was dead, he would have believed the Prophet himself was standing before them. Burns regarded this 'mantle' experience as a decisive confirmation of divine authority, resolving any doubt regarding who was chosen to lead the Church in the wake of the succession crisis. This internal spiritual certainty was shared by many Saints who witnessed the event and came to recognize the Quorum of the Twelve as the rightful stewards of the Church.
In Their Own Words
“I also remember when Sidney Rigdon was trying to install himself as guardian of the Church in the summer of 1844, President Young stepped upon the stand at a meeting and seeming to bear upon him the mantle of Joseph the Prophet. Had there been any doubt as to Joseph’s death I would have been sure it was he speaking to the people. — Enoch Burns, The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 56, No. 26”
