Ellen Wellard, a resident of London, was seeking spiritual direction while a member of another religious sect. She prayed for guidance, received comfort from a scriptural passage, and later had a vivid dream where she prayed with others to receive the Holy Spirit. In the dream, she heard a voice emphasizing the necessity of baptism by water and Spirit. The very next day, a missionary knocked on her door offering a tract titled 'Is Baptism Essential to Salvation?'. She recognized this as the fulfillment of her dream, leading her and her husband to baptism.
In Their Own Words
“I will now relate a dream which the Lord gave to me one night, and which was the means of bringing me into the true Church of Christ. I dreamed that I entered a room where several men were engaged in prayer. I knelt down also and began to offer up my petitions to the Most High. I prayed to the Lord to reveal to us by His Spirit what He desired us to do. So sincere was I in prayer that I attracted the attention of the other worshipers. I prayed to the Lord to baptize each one of us with the baptism of His Holy Spirit. Just then I seemed to hear a voice, saying, 'Yes, that is what you need.' 'Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.' I felt a great peace settle upon my soul, and I awoke. In the afternoon of the same day a knock came to my door. I opened it, and was met by a respectable-looking gentleman, who asked me if I would be kind enough to accept a Gospel tract. I told him that I would be pleased to do so. He handed me a leaflet, and my surprise can be imagined when I saw at the top of it the following title, 'Is Baptism Essential to Salvation?' My thoughts naturally reverted to my dream. Could it be possible that this was the beginning of its fulfillment? I invited the gentleman into my house, and he explained to me the principles of the Gospel as taught by the Latter-day Saints. My husband and I investigated the message, and we were both convinced that it was the truth. We were baptized, and we have never regretted the step we took.”
