During the early missionary period in Mendon, New York, Eleazer Miller was instrumental in bringing the gospel to the region. Heber C. Kimball, who resided in Mendon, recalled that Miller would frequently retire to a small grove near his home to engage in secret prayer. According to Kimball’s account, Miller would become so deeply filled with the spirit and power of the Holy Ghost during these private devotions that he would burst out into a loud voice, powerful enough to be heard by the surrounding inhabitants for more than a mile. This remarkable vocal phenomenon was a testament to the intensity of Miller's spiritual experiences. Later, during the 1834 Zion's Camp expedition—a company of Latter-day Saints traveling to Missouri—witnesses noted that Miller’s powerful voice carried for a mile and a half during his public exhortations, corroborating the earlier reports of his extraordinary vocal projection while in prayer.

In Their Own Words

“I would here remark concerning brother Eleazer Miller who was one of the first that brought the gospel to us in Mendon N. Y., when he used to retire to a little grove near my house for secret prayer, he would get so filled with the spirit and power of the Holy Ghost that he would burst out into a loud voice, so that he was heard by the surrounding inhabitants for more than a mile. — Heber C. Kimball, Times and Seasons, 15 January 1845”
