In September 1889, a company of Latter-day Saint emigrants under Elder W. P. Payne was traveling by train through Virginia when heavy rains or a cloudburst washed out a bridge. The wreck occurred near Lynchburg; one account places it four miles below Lynchburg and dates it to September 15. The accounts differ on the company’s size (165 Saints in one, 160 in the other) and describe the cars’ positions in differing detail: two cars plunged toward a creek, with one overturned and wrecked and the other left partly ditched or almost perpendicular. Although the accident occurred at midnight in darkness and the cars carried women and children, no one was killed or seriously injured. The fuller account also says an infant missing in the confusion was found alive and safe behind a stove in the wreckage. Payne and others regarded the passengers’ preservation as miraculous.
In Their Own Words
“The train was a special, and was running ahead of the train about twenty minutes. The wreck was caused by a small bridge giving way after the engine and car had passed over it. The water in the creek was very high, caused by the heaviest rain almost ever known in this section. The emigrants numbered 160. Two cars plunged into the creek, and strange to say, no one was killed, and but few persons were hurt, none seriously. The car that went down turned completely over and is a total wreck; and the second car struck on one end and stood almost perpendicularly. The passengers were badly shaken up; but when brought here Elder W. P. Payne, in charge of the party, stated that none were crippled, and all would continue on their journey as soon as a train could be made up. — Millennial Star 51:39”
