Elder W. E. Clark of the London Conference received a letter containing a three-pound postal order from an unknown individual who signed the letter as 'A Lover of Truth.' This was treated as a distinct, divinely-guided answer to prayer and support for the missionary cause.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 60, No. 35, 1 September 1898, page 555):
Elder W. E. Clark, of the London Conference, recently received a letter containing a three-pound postal order from an unknown individual, who signed the letter 'A Lover of Truth.' This is a very welcome addition to the funds of the Conference, and we pray that the Lord may bless the donor for this act of kindness.
In Their Own Words
“ELDER W. E. CLARK of the London Conference, is pleased to acknowledge the receipt of £3 from an unknown friend, enclosed in a letter worded as follows: 'President of Latter-day Saints, London. Dear Sir, I enclose a postal order for £3, hoping you will accept for your cause. With best wishes for your welfare, I remain. Yours, A Lover of Truth.' President Clark desires also to express through the Star his heartfelt thanks and gratitude for this substantial manifestation of good will and interest in the work of the Lord. — Millennial Star 60:35”
