Elder Theodore Curtis was arrested and brought before a magistrate in Gloucester, England, on charges of 'blasphemy'—specifically, preaching the Gospel. He was bound over in the sum of forty pounds. After appearing at the Court of Sessions and waiting three days, the court found no bill against him, and he was released after paying court costs.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 2, No. 4 (August 1841), p. 63):
BROTHER CURTIS AND THE TRIAL FOR BLASPHEMY. We have received a letter from Elder Theodore Curtis, dated Gloucester, July 26th, 1841, from which we learn that he has been arraigned before a magistrate, and bound over in the sum of forty pounds, for 'blasphemy,' i.e., preaching the Gospel. He appeared at the Court of Sessions, at Gloucester, and after three days, was informed on inquiry, no bill was found against him, and was suffered to go at large again after paying one pound and one shilling cost. Thus we see that the same opposition to truth prevails in other countries, as well as in this.
In Their Own Words
“Elder Theodore Curtis, having previously been arrainged before a magistrate, and bound over in the sum of forty pounds, for “ blasphemy,” i.e., preaching the Gospel, appeared at the Court of Sessions, at Gloucester, England, and after three days, was informed on inquiry, no bill was found against him, and was suffered to go at large again after paying one pound and one chilling cost. Thus we see that the same opposition to truth prevails in other countries, as well as in this.— Millennial Star 18:37”
