While traveling to Baltimore, Elders Heber C. Kimball and Lyman Wight felt anxious due to conflicting reports about the deaths of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. They went into their closets and prayed to the Lord to open the way to know the truth. Immediately following this, Elder Kimball went to the post office and received letters from his wife confirming the massacre of the Prophets.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 25, No. 1, January 3, 1863, page 11):

While at Baltimore, Elders Heber C. Kimball and Lyman Wight felt a great depression of spirit, and were very anxious to hear from Nauvoo, as they had heard many conflicting reports about the Prophets Joseph and Hyrum Smith. They went into their closets and prayed to the Lord to open the way, whereby they might know the truth concerning it. Immediately Elder Kimball went to the post-office, and got letters up to the 24th of June from his wife, informing him that Presidents Joseph and Hyrum Smith had delivered themselves up into the hands of their enemies to be tried, upon reading which they were immediately satisfied that the Prophets were massacred.

In Their Own Words

“They went into their closets and prayed to the Lord to open the way whereby they might know the truth concerning it. — Millennial Star 25:1”
