In April 1883, while laboring as a missionary in the Netherlands, Elder J. W. F. Volker experienced a remarkable manifestation of divine guidance. He encountered five individuals who were actively traveling toward Groningen with the express intent of being baptized into the Baptist church. These seekers had been earnest in their petitions, praying for the Lord to show them the true way of salvation. Volker recorded that the Lord 'prevented them from going' to their intended destination and instead directed his path to meet them. Upon entering into conversation with these individuals, Volker found them to be honest and sincere in their desire to serve God and keep His commandments. Recognizing their preparedness, he taught them the restored gospel. They accepted his message, and he subsequently baptized them. According to contemporaneous reports and Volker's own writings regarding his missionary labors in Holland, the ordinance was performed under difficult circumstances, including a baptismal service conducted at 11:00 p.m. in bitter, freezing conditions.

In Their Own Words

“Since my last writing to you I had the privilege, through the blessing of God, of bringing five more persons to the knowledge of God and baptizing them. They were going to a place called Groningen, to be baptized into the Baptist church, but the Lord prevented them from going, and brought me to them. I conversed with them, and found they were honest people, trying to serve God and keep His commandments, and always praying to Him to open the only way of salvation for them. In their case the words of the Savior were fulfilled, ‘Whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.’ — J. W. F. Volker, Millennial Star 45:17”
