While traveling on the steamboat Adelaide, Elder Heber C. Kimball had a dream where he inspected a large quantity of pottery and found the contents to be yellow, rotten stuff of no account, which he took to represent the clay of the world that he should not work with.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 21, No. 48, 26 November 1859):
Elders Young, Woodruff, and Smith left Cincinnati at eleven a.m., on board the Adelaide, for Pittsburg. While on board, Elder Kimball dreamed that he was at work in a pottery, where there was a large amount of clay drawn to the shop—he examined it, found it to be yellow, rotten stuff, of no account; and he concluded to work up this clay into nothing, for it was rotten. He then went to another part of the shop, and found a large quantity of clay, which was of a superior quality, and he commenced working it up into vessels of various kinds, and they were beautiful and of a superior quality. He felt satisfied with his work, and thought he would have a great many vessels to sell. He then went to the kiln to set his ware, and found that the kiln was not large enough to hold all his ware, and he was troubled to know how he should get it all in. He then thought he would take the best of it, and leave the rest. He then awoke, and felt to thank the Lord for this dream, for he felt that it was a warning to him to be careful what kind of material he worked with, and that he should not spend his time and talents upon that which was of no account, but to labor for that which would be of value to the kingdom of God.
