Elder A. H. R. Parley was attacked by three men in Tennessee while performing missionary work. The men fired three bullets simultaneously; one passed through the crown of his hat, and one ball grazed his clothing, but he was miraculously spared from serious injury. He lost consciousness but later recovered to find his assailants gone and made his way to the home of Brother Lafayette, where he collapsed.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 45, No. 27, July 2, 1883, p. 427):

Elder A. H. R. Parley, who is laboring in Tennessee, had a narrow escape from death at the hands of a mob on the 12th of June. He was walking along the road, when three men stepped out from behind some bushes and fired at him. They fired three shots simultaneously. One bullet passed through the crown of his hat, and one ball, apparently aimed at his heart, passed through his clothing and out towards the back, and yet he was untouched. He lost consciousness from the shock and the effect of the blow, and remained so for some moments, and as he recovered consciousness, he got upon his hands and knees and looked about, but his assailants had departed, no one being in sight, and he slowly made his way to the road, and finally reached the house of Brother Lafayette, where he fell down exhausted.

In Their Own Words

“One bullet passed through the crown of his hat, and one ball, apparently aimed at his heart, passed through his clothing and out towards the back, and yet he was untouched. — Millennial Star 45:27”
