In the spring of 1836, following a winter spent studying in Kirtland, Ohio, Elder Milo Andrus was present for the momentous dedication of the Kirtland Temple and the accompanying endowment of the elders, which the Lord had promised as a reward for their offerings. During this period, the blessings of the Lord were manifested in abundance among the gathered Saints. As Andrus later recorded in his autobiographical sketch, he witnessed a profound spiritual occurrence: when the Holy Ghost was poured out upon the elders, he saw fire descend and rest upon their heads, accompanied by the manifestation of the gift of tongues and prophecy. This experience stood out to him as a time of great joy and a testament to the spiritual outpourings that defined the Kirtland period of Church history.

In Their Own Words

“There is one thing that I would here relate, that was a great joy to me, and that was when the Holy Ghost was poured out on the elders, I saw fire descend and rest on the heads of the elders, and they spoke with tongues, and prophesied. — Milo Andrus, Autobiographical Sketch of Milo Andrus (1814-1875), Typescript, Harold B. Lee Library”
