Edward Brewer reports that while leading a company of Saints across the Atlantic on their way to Utah, the ship encountered a severe gale shortly after leaving Queenstown. Most of the passengers and crew were incapacitated for four days. During the storm, the Saints united in prayer for divine help, immediately after which the wind shifted, and they were able to continue their journey safely.
In Their Own Words
“The voyage across the Atlantic is one that will long be remembered. We ourselves fared well, with the exception of four days, when the night out from Queenstown we encountered a heavy gale, and nearly all on board were afflicted with the unpleasant sickness, and the circumstances for a while looked quite dark for the Saints, as well as the crew; the steerage were unable to get on deck. We were afraid of some disease breaking out. On the fourth day I told the Saints that the winds and waves were so soon to cease if we would only show faith in our prayers, and toward night, under favorable promptings, we all felt with one accord to offer our petitions, and immediately the wind came more from the north, and the clouds broke away, and more canvas was put on. The next day all hands were able to come on deck again, for which we felt to rejoice.”
