While preaching in Yorkshire on April 25, 1883, Elders George Croft and William Street were harassed by a group using a drum to disrupt them. After their meeting, the Elders were followed by a mob that threw stones at them. Seeking protection in front of a public house, Elder Croft addressed the mob, telling them they came to save souls, not to be injured. The Elders then proceeded to Brother Street's home unmolested.

In Their Own Words

“On Wednesday, April 25th, Elder William Street and myself held a meeting in the open air at a place called Wombwell, near Barnsley. We had a very attentive congregation for some time, but towards the close of our meeting a few roughs made their appearance, and commenced to disturb the meeting by beating a drum and making a great noise. We closed our meeting, but not to the satisfaction of some of the bystanders, who seemed disposed to trample us under their feet, but we were fortunate enough to get through the mass into the street, when we bade them good evening and proceeded onward. We had not gone far when we found to our surprise that we were followed by a mob who began throwing stones. This was followed up until we reached the end of the village, when we came to the conclusion that we had better seek protection before proceeding further. We consequently stopped in front of a public house, and the mob came up close to us. I addressed them for about ten minutes, and in the course of my remarks told them we were servants of God, that we came out to do them good, not to injure them, nor did we wish to be injured by them. We then went our way unmolested, arriving at Brother Street's about ten o'clock, thankful to our God for his protecting care over us.”
