Elders J. L. Bunting and Haigh, while traveling in Ballaugh, Isle of Man, were initially unable to find lodging. They encountered a farmer named John Corlett, to whom they gave a tract and explained their mission. He provided them with free hospitality and lodging for the night, with an invitation to return. The Elders viewed this as an intervention from the Lord in opening a door when one had appeared closed.
In Their Own Words
“Dear Brother,—After writing you on the 5th inst., Elder Haigh and myself proceeded to the village of Ballaugh where, being disappointed in our expectations to find lodgings at a certain place, we were kindly entertained, free of cost, and lodged for the night, with urgent invitation to call again and stay whenever we choose to do so, at a very respectable farmer’s by the name of Mr. John Corlett. We presented a tract to him on the road, and made known our mission to him and to his family. We felt to acknowledge the hand of the Lord in thus opening another door, when one was apparently closed.”
