Two young men went into the canyon to gather wood. While on a steep hillside, the elder brother's wagon became stuck against a stump. While he was trying to twist the tongue of the wagon to free it, the wagon slipped and pinned his foot against the stump. He was unable to free himself. His brother came to help but could not move the wagon or cut the stump. Just as he felt he could stand it no longer and was about to die, he was lifted by an unseen power, allowing him to exit easily. His injuries were not severe, and he was able to return home.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 43, No. 22 (30 May 1881), p. 351):

Two young men went into the canyon to gather wood. While on a steep hillside, the elder brother's wagon became stuck against a stump. While he was trying to twist the tongue of the wagon to free it, the wagon slipped and pinned his foot against the stump. He was unable to free himself. His brother came to help but could not move the wagon or cut the stump. Just as he felt he could stand it no longer and was about to die, he was lifted by an unseen power, allowing him to exit easily. His injuries were not severe, and he was able to return home. The elder brother had always been prayerful, and had great faith; his faith was strengthened, he always looked upon this as a death-bed scene. I asked him what he thought about it, he said, Mother, I felt and knew that some one helped him out!

In Their Own Words

“The elder brother had always been prayerful, and had great faith; his faith was strengthened, he always looked upon this as a death-bed scene. I asked him what he thought about it, he said, Mother, I felt and knew that some one helped him out! — Millennial Star 43:22”
