Missionaries J. M. Tanner and Jacob Spori in Constantinople were contacted by a doctor who informed them that a high-ranking government minister, Munif Pasha, requested a meeting with them. The missionaries expressed their belief that this development was a manifestation of God's influence.
In Their Own Words
“Something of an extraordinary character has developed partially since I last wrote. Last Sunday we were informed by a Dr. Girigossian, that Munif Pasha, the Minister of Public Instruction, and one of the brightest intellects of Islam, had heard there were 'Mormon' missionaries at the capital, and expressed a desire that the doctor should bring about a meeting. We were, of course, pleased to be thus honored, and feel to acknowledge the hand of God in these things. We met the Pasha at his office in the Sublime Porte. He received us with great cordiality, and expressed a lively interest in our people, their history, and their faith. He asked many questions concerning our belief in the Godhead, our views of the Bible, and the nature of our organization. He seemed particularly interested in the fact that we had no paid ministry, and that our missionaries were sent out at their own expense. He spoke of the great progress of the age, and of the necessity of a broader and more liberal spirit in religious matters. He expressed a desire to read some of our works, and we promised to furnish him with such as we had in the French language. We left him with a feeling that a door had been opened for the introduction of the Gospel in this land, which, though it may be slow in its results, will eventually lead to the accomplishment of the purposes of the Almighty in this part of the world.”
