On June 19, 1835, while in Benton County, Tennessee, Apostle David W. Patten and his companion Warren Parrish were at the home of Seth Utley when a mob of approximately forty armed men, led by local officials including Sheriff Robert C. Petty and a Methodist priest named Matthew Williams, surrounded the residence. The men were operating under a state warrant issued after the priest alleged the missionaries had falsely prophesied regarding the second coming of Christ and the reception of the Holy Ghost. Following a preliminary hearing, the brethren were bound over under $2,000 bail. A mock trial was held on June 22, 1836, where the mob—which had grown to one hundred men—denied the defendants the right to call witnesses or speak in their own defense. Despite the judge pronouncing them guilty, Patten, filled with the Holy Ghost, stood and rebuked them so powerfully that they were physically unable to rise until he had finished speaking. The court ultimately ordered them to pay the costs of the proceedings and depart the state within ten days. Seeking temporary refuge after fleeing the mob's subsequent attempt to pursue them, Patten and Parrish retreated to the home of Albert Petty. During the night, a heavenly messenger appeared to Patten, warning him that the mob was approaching and commanding him to flee. Patten awoke Parrish, and they saddled their animals and escaped toward Henry County just before the house was surrounded. The mob searched the premises and tracked the brethren until they reached the county line, where they finally abandoned the chase.

In Their Own Words

“They had not been long asleep when some heavenly messenger came to bro. Patten and told him to arise and leave that place, for the mob was after them and would soon be at that house. Elder Patten awoke Parrish and told him to arise and dress himself, as the mob would soon be upon them. They arose, saddled their animals and started for Henry county in the night. — Life of David W. Patten, Juvenile Instructor, October 15, 1896”
