David Candland — Preservation during the Battle of the Bulls
Published September 2, 2026 at 3:22 PM
On December 11, 1846, while marching with Company B of the Mormon Battalion along the San Pedro River, David Candland witnessed the 'Battle of the Bulls.' A herd of wild bulls attacked the column, goring mules and overturning wagons. Candland recorded the event as a moment of extreme danger where the men were caught off guard. Despite the violence of the charge, Candland and his fellow soldiers were remarkably preserved from death or catastrophic injury, a survival the battalion members attributed to the Lord's protection over their mission.
