Curtis Brown, a standout running back from Palmdale, California, came to Brigham Young University in 2002 to play football — but found something far more valuable than athletic success. His conversion to the Church during his sophomore year is a powerful modern testament of how the Lord guides His children to the truth.

Growing up, Curtis had a nondenominational Christian background. His mother was raised Catholic and his father had an east-coast Baptist upbringing. He attended various churches throughout his childhood and was puzzled by the confusion of competing denominations. He recalled wondering: "Why do we have all these churches, none of them are alike each other and they are so different, and it's almost like, how do you know which church is the right church to go to?" — a question remarkably similar to the one that led Joseph Smith to the Sacred Grove.

When Curtis was recruited by BYU, he had offers from UCLA, Washington State, and Clemson. What set BYU apart was consistency — they were the first to respond to his highlight tape and the fastest to act. But the deciding moment came when he stepped off the plane: "When I got off the plane in Salt Lake City and made the little drive to Provo, there was a feeling that I knew that this was the place for me." This impression, felt before he ever set foot on campus, was a spiritual witness that God was leading him to a place where he would find the restored gospel.

At BYU, Curtis was surrounded by faithful Latter-day Saint roommates and teammates. He was impressed by their standards, their kindness, and the consistency of their lives. He began to investigate the Church, taking the missionary discussions. Each night he prayed about what he was learning, and he "felt good about it." He told himself, "I don't know what God they expect me to pray to, but the God I'm praying to is gonna tell me the right answer. And every night I prayed, I just felt good about it."

Curtis was baptized at age 19. He described the experience of going into the water and coming out: "I was just like, 'Wow, 19 years old, I'm finally doing this.'" He felt a powerful confirmation that he had made the right decision. The feeling was so vivid that he said, "It's almost like it happened yesterday, just the feeling."

One of the most touching moments of his conversion came when he told his mother. She called him, sniffling, and he thought she had a cold. But she told him: "I just felt like I let you down because I've tried so hard to put you in a position to hear the gospel, and finally something clicked for you and I felt I didn't have anything to do with that." His mother recognized that the Lord had been working in Curtis's life all along, guiding him to BYU and to the gospel.

Curtis bore his testimony: "I know this Church is true. I know that the moment, you know, where we're elders, that Heavenly Father will truly bless us. It's truly one of a kind. Knowing that we're always gonna have an opportunity to strive for perfection if we stay committed to that, then Heavenly Father will bless us."

His conversion is a powerful modern witness that the Lord guides His children to the truth — sometimes through a feeling upon arriving in a new place, sometimes through the example of faithful friends, and always through the whisperings of the Spirit that confirm the truth to those who seek with real intent.
