Caroline Angell Healed of Chills and Fever Immediately After Her Baptism (Shoal Creek, Missouri, 1838)
Published September 28, 2026 at 4:26 AM
Caroline Frances Angell, then twelve going on thirteen, had resisted baptism while her whole family joined the Church in New York. After the family moved to Missouri and settled near the Saints at Far West, she was finally baptized — in January 1838, in Shoal Creek, by Brigham Young, who also confirmed her. She had been very sick with chills and fever, but testifies she was healed immediately after her baptism and confirmation — well enough that by the following summer, still only thirteen, she was teaching a school of about twenty-five pupils.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
On account of the surrounding circumstances, I was not baptized until January 1838 in Shoal Creek, Missouri, by President Brigham Young and confirmed by him. I was very sick with chills and fever. I was immediately healed after being baptized and confirmed. I was thirteen years old in October before I taught school the next following summer. I had about 25 pupils. I learned them what was taught in common schools, the girls to knit and sew. This was in Missouri.
