Brigham Young — The Testimony of Eleazer Miller That Filled Him with Light (1832)
Published September 28, 2026 at 7:37 AM
Brigham Young testified in this discourse that his conversion came not from learned argument but from the power attending a humble man's witness. Eleazer Miller — the missionary who baptized him near Mendon, New York, in April 1832 — 'could only say, "I know, by the power of the Holy Ghost, that the Book of Mormon is true, that Joseph Smith is a Prophet of the Lord."' Brigham testified: 'the Holy Ghost proceeding from that individual illuminated my understanding, and light, glory, and immortality were before me. I was encircled by them, filled with them, and I knew for myself that the testimony of the man was true.' Of his baptism he declared, 'It filled my system with light, and my soul with joy.' His natural judgment, endowments, and education bowed to that simple, mighty testimony — an account of the manifest power of the Holy Ghost in the conversion of the man who would lead the Church west.
In Their Own Words
“If all the talent, tact, wisdom, and refinement of the world had been sent to me with the Book of Mormon, and had declared, in the most exalted of earthly eloquence, the truth of it, undertaking to prove it by learning and worldly wisdom, they would have been to me like the smoke which arises only to vanish away. But when I saw a man without eloquence, or talents for public speaking, who could only say, "I know, by the power of the Holy Ghost, that the Book of Mormon is true, that Joseph Smith is a Prophet of the Lord," the Holy Ghost proceeding from that individual illuminated my understanding, and light, glory, and immortality were before me. I was encircled by them, filled with them, and I knew for myself that the testimony of the man was true. But the wisdom of the world, I say again, is like smoke, like the fog of the night, that disappears before the rays of the luminary of day, or like the hoarfrost in the warmth of the sun's rays. My own judgment, natural endowments, and education bowed to this simple, but mighty testimony. There sits the man who baptized me (brother Eleazer Miller.) It filled my system with light, and my soul with joy.”
