While Bishop Fairbanks of Payson was inside his home, an unknown assailant on horseback fired three revolver shots through his window. The Bishop, who had heard the gate open, had stood up and was near the window when the shots were fired, but miraculously they passed over his head, leaving him unharmed.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 33, No. 20, 16 May 1871, p. 316):

Bishop Fairbanks, of Payson, had a narrow escape from death on the 24th ult. While sitting in his house, an unknown person on horseback rode up to the window and fired three shots from a revolver at him. The Bishop had heard the gate open, and had stood up, and was near the window when the shots were fired, but they passed over his head, and he was unhurt.
