Benjamin Goddard reports on a family in New Zealand who were led to the Church after having heard an English Elder preach in a market place twenty years prior. The mother, Mrs. S., recounted the random remarks about the restoration of the Gospel and the vision of the angel that she had heard in her youth in an English town. After she and her husband settled in the Otaki district of New Zealand, they saw a newspaper paragraph regarding a meeting held by Elders Cox and Nielson. They wrote to the Elders, were visited by them, and subsequently the entire family was baptized and received temple blessings.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Young Woman's Journal, vol. 15 no. 1 (January 1904), p. 43):
In the Owaka district, South Island, New Zealand, a family was led to the Church in a remarkable manner. Twenty years ago, in an English town, the mother heard an Elder preach in the market place. She remembered his remarks about the restoration of the Gospel and the vision of an angel. After she and her husband settled in the Otaki district, New Zealand, they saw a newspaper paragraph regarding a meeting held by Elders Cox and Nielson. They wrote to the Elders, were visited by them, and subsequently the entire family was baptized and received temple blessings.
In Their Own Words
“With tears of gratitude the good mother recounted to her children her experience in Fatherland and the deep impression that the random remarks of those two Elders had made upon her soul, nearly a quarter of a century before. Night after night the Gospel was the theme of conversation. The Elders were compelled to leave, but returned again and again, until ultimately Brother S. and all his household were baptized members of the Church. Years passed away. Finally the family was privileged to gather to Zion and to receive the blessings of heaven in the Temple of the Lord. — The Young Woman's Journal 15:1”
