In 1838, while a prisoner of a Missouri mob, Benjamin F. Johnson was repeatedly threatened with death. A man attempted to shoot him at close range with a rifle three times, but the gun failed to fire. When the man attempted to reload and fire a fourth time, the gun burst and killed the attacker instead.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

While I was a prisoner at Adam-ondi-Ahman, I was one day sitting upon a log, when a man came to me with a rifle in his hand, and said, 'You give up Mormonism right now, or I will shoot you.' I replied, 'I cannot give up my religion.' He then exclaimed with fearful oaths, 'I will send you to hell right now,' and taking deliberate aim, not ten feet distant, he pulled the trigger. The gun did not go off. He then primed it again, and again tried to kill me, but with the same result. He then primed it a third time, and again tried to kill me, but the gun would not fire. He then began to curse and swear, and said he would fix it so it would go off. He then picked the flint, and fixed the priming, and again took aim at me, and pulled the trigger. This time the gun burst, and the breech-pin struck him in the forehead, and killed him upon the spot.

In Their Own Words

“While sitting upon a log one day a brute came to him with rifle in hand, saying, 'You give up Mormonism right now, or I'll shoot you.' Receiving a decisive refusal, he exclaimed with fearful oaths, 'I'll send you to hell right now,' took deliberate aim not ten feet distant and pulled the trigger. No explosion occurred... He did so and again tried to kill Johnson. This time the gun burst and killed the wretch upon the spot. — Millennial Star 68:3”
