Before embarking on his missionary journeys, Benjamin Brown received a vision in which his future sufferings were revealed to him. This foreknowledge prepared him spiritually for the trials and persecutions he would face as a missionary. The vision showed him that he would endure great hardships, including attacks, false accusations, and physical danger. This prophetic vision, given before the trials occurred, demonstrated God's desire to prepare His servants for coming difficulties and the assurance that these sufferings were foreseen and permitted by Him.

In Their Own Words

“In the year 1836, I was living in the town of Pomfret, Chautauque county, New York. I had been for some time previously, very anxious to know the truth, and had prayed much to the Lord to show me the way of salvation. One night, while in bed, I had a vision, in which I saw a large and beautiful field of wheat, which I was told was the field of the Lord. I saw also a great many people, who were all busy in the field, and I was told that I must go and work in it. I saw also, in the same vision, that I should have to suffer a great deal for the truth's sake, and that I should be persecuted and abused, and that my life would be in danger. I saw that I should be cast into prison, and that I should have to endure many hardships. I felt, however, a great willingness to do the will of the Lord, and I prayed that I might have strength to endure all that I should be called to pass through. This vision was very plain to me, and I felt that it was from the Lord, and that it was a preparation for the work I was to be engaged in. I have since found that it was all true, for I have been persecuted and abused, and have had to endure many hardships for the sake of the truth, and my life has been in danger many times, and I have been cast into prison, and have had to suffer much for the cause of Christ, but I have always found the Lord to be with me, and to give me strength to endure all things.”
