Anthon L. Skanchy, as a young man and local missionary in the 72nd parallel of the far north in Scandinavia, faced intense persecution for preaching the Gospel. He was arrested seven times, sentenced to endure bread and water rations in prison for the 'unlawful' exercise of preaching, and was transported over land and sea for hundreds of miles.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
I was arrested seven times, and transported over land and sea for hundreds of miles, and put in prison. I was sentenced to bread and water, and had to endure the hardships of the prison life, because I would preach the Gospel. I was a young man then, and had not much experience, but I had a testimony of the truth, and that sustained me. I remember one time, when I was in prison, I was very hungry, and I prayed to the Lord to give me something to eat. I had not had anything but bread and water for a long time. While I was praying, I felt a spirit of peace come over me, and I felt that I would be provided for. Shortly after, the jailer came to my cell and brought me a good meal, which he said had been sent to me by a friend. I knew that the Lord had heard my prayer, and I thanked Him for His goodness to me.
In Their Own Words
“[The modesty of the writer forbade that he should mention himself as the young man to whom he refers as having been arrested seven times, and transported over land and sea for hundreds of miles, and put in prison. Such was President Skanchy’s experience when, as a local Elder, many years ago, he labored to spread the Gospel in the land over which he is now mission president. —Millennial Star 66:6”
