In 1859, William Atkin and his wife, traveling with the Rowley Handcart Company, became separated from their group. Upon reaching the Green River, they found the water swollen and the company gone. After praying for help, they crossed the river and landed on the western bank without even wetting the axletree of their cart, which they attributed to divine intervention.

In Their Own Words

“We again labored in pulling our cart, and when we came to Green River, we found the train had crossed and gone; and we were alone on its banks. We looked at the river, and I said to my wife, 'We cannot cross this river alone.' She said, 'No, but the Lord will help us.' We then knelt down and prayed to our Heavenly Father to help us across. We then got hold of our cart and started into the water. It was very deep and swift, and the water came up to our waists. We kept moving, and every step we took, the deep water was still ahead, and thus it was all the way across, and to our surprise we had not wet the axletree of our cart, and we were truly thankful to our Heavenly Father that we landed on the other bank in safety.”

— William Atkin, as quoted in 'This Is Exactly What I Signed Up For!' by Reid L. Neilson
