During the winter of 1855-1856, while working alone in North Mill Creek Canyon, Marriner W. Merrill was pinned under a 22-foot-long log that had fallen across his legs. With no one else in the canyon and unable to move, he prayed earnestly for help. He subsequently found himself extricated, his sled loaded, and his oxen hitched, though he had no memory of how this occurred. He attributed his survival to the Lord or a guardian angel.
In Their Own Words
“I did not conceive what to do under the trying ordeal, but concluded to ask the Lord to help me, which I did in earnest prayer. After calling upon the Lord, I found myself in a few minutes, I cannot say how, extricated from under the log, and my team hitched to the sled, and the logs loaded on the sled, and I was placed on top of the load. Who it was that extricated me from under the log, loaded my sled, hitched my oxen to it, and placed me on it, I cannot say, but I know for a surety no one was in the canyon that day but myself. Hence I must give the Lord, or my Guardian Angel, credit for saving my life in extricating me from so perilous a situation. — Marriner W. Merrill, Autobiography of Marriner Wood Merrill”
