During the Great War, an educated American chaplain serving in France visited a dying young soldier in a tent. Despite being told by a doctor that the boy would not survive, the soldier confidently insisted he would recover. The soldier later explained to the chaplain that he was a Latter-day Saint from Utah, had kept the commandments, and had received a specific witness that he would return home. This encounter initiated a deep interest in the Church that eventually led the chaplain to seek out Elders and convert to the faith.
In Their Own Words
“AndlAvent in and said to the young man: 'Buddy, you are very sick ? ' ' Yes,' said the boy with conviction, ' I am sick ; but I am going to get well.' Something in his tone struck me with peculiar force. I went up and took him by the hand and said: 'Buddy, I am glad to hear you say that ! ' ' Well,' he said, ' I say it and I know it is true.' — Millennial Star 86:36”
