While serving as a full-time missionary in the Spanish-American Mission, F. Melvin Hammond and his companion were confronted by individuals who intimidated, demeaned, and mocked the doctrines of the Church. Feeling overwhelmed and unable to match the opposition, Hammond prayed in his heart for divine help. He describes this experience as the moment he first truly felt the power of the Spirit rest upon him.

In Their Own Words

“My companion and I were no match for them. We were just boys fresh off the farm. They totally intimidated us, demeaned us, and tried to destroy our faith. In my heart I prayed for divine help. I had never really doubted, but that moment was the first time I truly felt the power of the Spirit rest upon me. — F. Melvin Hammond, A Remarkable Feeling”
