Bibliography Research
During the 1856 trek of the Willie Handcart Company, Jens Nielson suffered from severe frostbite on his feet while crossing Rocky Ridge, rendering him unable to walk. He urged his wife, Elsie, to leave him in the snow to die so she could save herself and their son. Elsie refused, placed him in the handcart, and pulled him herself, ultimately saving his life.
In Their Own Words
“Leave me by the trail in the snow to die, and you go ahead and try to keep up with the company and save your life. — Jens Nielson, as quoted in 'Mother, Carry On' by Julie Rodgers (via Lehi Utah Stake Pioneer Stories)”
