Joseph Smith saw in a retrospective vision that three years prior to his death, Adam called his righteous posterity, including Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch, and Methuselah, to the valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman. There, the Lord appeared to them, they blessed Adam, and Adam, though aged, was filled with the Holy Ghost and prophesied of his posterity's future generations.
In three separate contemporary accounts of a discourse given between late June and early August 1839 (recorded by Willard Richards, an unidentified scribe, and William Clayton), Joseph Smith further clarified that after the Lord appeared in their midst, Adam blessed them all and specifically foretold what would befall them unto the latest generation. These accounts also reference Doctrine and Covenants 107:53–57 (then numbered as section 3), noting that those to whom the keys of this priesthood are given will again assemble with Christ in the midst at the coming of the Ancient of Days.
In Their Own Words
“I saw Adam in the valley of Ah-dam ondi-ahman— he called together his children & blessed them with a Patriarchal blessing. The Lord appeared in their midst. & he (Adam) blessed them all & foretold what should befall them to the latest generation— See D.C. Sec III 28. 29 1 par. . . . Those men to whom these Keys have been given will have to be there (I.E. when Adam shall again assemble his children of the Priesthood, & christ be in their midst) the Ancient of Days come &c &c J. T.) And they without us cannot not be made perfect. — Willard Richards, Discourse record, circa June 26 – August 4, 1839, in The Joseph Smith Papers, Journals and Discourses”
