Mary, a young woman living in London, faced extreme opposition from her father due to her conversion to the Latter-day Saint faith. Despite her father's ultimatum to renounce her faith or leave, Mary chose to remain true to her religious convictions. After being cast out by her father, she sought help from Church members and missionaries, successfully arranged her passage to Zion, and journeyed to America to join her aunt and uncle in Utah, finding spiritual peace in her decision despite the hardship of leaving her family.

In Their Own Words

“Quietly, she told her father that she had decided to be baptized into the Mormon Church. 'I will not leave you, Father, if you want me to stay. But I believe that this Gospel is the key to life and salvation, and I would only bring condemnation on myself if I said it was not true. I am going to be baptized tomorrow.' It took high courage to make the decision, and courage to face her father and tell him. He stood silently looking at her for a long time, his eyes steely and dull. When he spoke his words were measured and bitter. 'You have never been a true daughter to me, Mary, since you have known those accursed Mormons. You have departed from the teachings of your father and mother. Your very words now show that you have ceased to love your own flesh and blood and have followed after these hypocrites. The very devil is in you. Until you come to tell me you no longer are a Mormon, never let me see you again. Take what you want and get out now.' — The Young Woman's Journal 35:8”
