During his missionary travels as an RLDS Apostle in the 1870s, James Caffall recorded an instance of divine protection while traveling through the American West. He and his companions felt a strong spiritual impression to alter their planned route through Kansas. They later discovered that by following this prompting, they had narrowly avoided a violent confrontation with a mob that had gathered to intercept them. Caffall attributed this escape to the direct intervention and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
