The St. George Tabernacle Clock — Providential Assembly

The large clock for the St. George Tabernacle was a complex mechanism ordered from London and transported to the remote desert of Southern Utah. Zaidee Walker Miles describes the 'remarkable providence' of its arrival and installation. The clock arrived in hundreds of intricate pieces with no expert horologist available in the settlement to assemble it. Through what the pioneers considered divine inspiration and guidance, local craftsmen were able to correctly assemble and install the mechanism. The clock began striking the hours in 1872, providing a sense of order and divine favor to the isolated Dixie pioneers.
