Tarleton Lewis — Healing of the Sick in Parowan

After being called to help settle Parowan (the Iron County Mission) in the early 1850s, Tarleton Lewis served as the Bishop of the Second Ward. During a period when the settlement was afflicted by severe illness and lacked professional medical assistance, Lewis was frequently called upon to administer to the sick. The Hunt manuscript records a specific instance where a woman in the settlement was suffering from a life-threatening fever and was believed to be near death. Through the laying on of hands and a Priesthood blessing administered by Lewis, the fever was said to have left her immediately, and she made a rapid and complete recovery, which the community viewed as a testament to the power of faith and the Priesthood.
