In 1882, while traveling between settlements in the Arizona Territory during a period of unrest involving local Apache groups and outlaws, Jesse Nathaniel Smith experienced a sudden and powerful spiritual impression to deviate from his planned route. He followed this prompting, taking a less direct path. He later discovered that a group of hostile individuals had been lying in wait at a specific point on his original trail, and he credited his escape to the protective warning of the Holy Ghost.
