In the fall of 1861, while visiting the valley that would become St. George, Brigham Young stood on a ridge and prophesied that a city would be built there with a temple featuring 'spires, towers and steeples.' This vision was given at a time when the area was a forbidding desert, and it served as a divine mandate for the pioneers who faced extreme heat, alkaline soil, and isolation during the Cotton Mission.
