During the 1847 pioneer trek, Erastus Snow was sleeping on the ground when he was awakened by a sudden, distinct spiritual impression to move. Upon rising and shaking out his blankets, he discovered a large rattlesnake coiled in the exact spot where his head had been resting. He recorded this in his autobiography as a clear instance of divine protection over the leaders of the migration.
