In June 1844, while serving a mission in the Eastern States, Erastus Snow felt a powerful and persistent spiritual impression that he must immediately return to Nauvoo. Upon his arrival, he learned of the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. He recorded this as a direct guidance from the Holy Ghost to be with the Saints during their time of crisis, arriving just in time to participate in the subsequent meetings regarding the succession in the presidency.
