John Brown was born on October 23, 1820, in Castalian Springs, Tennessee. As a young man growing up in the American South, he encountered missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. According to his published life record, Autobiography of Pioneer John Brown, 1820-1896, Brown experienced a profound spiritual awakening as he investigated the restored gospel. He received a distinct and powerful witness from the Holy Ghost, which dispelled his doubts and filled him with a deep, abiding faith in the truthfulness of the message. Acting on this divine confirmation, John Brown was baptized on July 4, 1841, at the age of 20, by Elder George Parker Dykes. This spiritual conversion marked a pivotal turning point in his life, requiring immense personal sacrifice. Leaving behind his former life and facing the inevitable social ostracism that accompanied joining the unpopular faith, he relocated to Nauvoo, Illinois, to gather with the main body of the Saints. His conversion was not merely a fleeting emotional experience but a foundational spiritual anchor. It empowered him to serve a successful mission to the Southern States in 1843, where he preached the very gospel that had transformed his own life.
