Witnessing the Miracle of the Quail

In the fall of 1846, following the martyrdom of Joseph Smith and the ensuing mob violence, thousands of Latter-day Saints were forcibly driven from their homes in Nauvoo, Illinois. The most destitute among them-those who lacked the wagons, teams, or provisions to leave earlier with Brigham Young's vanguard companies-found themselves stranded along the western banks of the Mississippi River in Iowa. This group of refugees, suffering from starvation, exposure, and malaria, formed what became known in Church history as the Poor Camps. Curtis E. Bolton and his family were among those who experienced this harrowing displacement. During this desperate time, when many were falling ill and dying from lack of food and shelter, a remarkable event occurred that Bolton witnessed firsthand. On the morning of October 9, 1846, the Lord provided for the starving pioneers in a manner reminiscent of the Israelites being fed in the wilderness. Great flocks of quail suddenly flew into the pioneer camps. The birds were flying so low and were so exhausted that they crashed into wagons and tents, falling directly at the feet of the pioneers. The quail were remarkably tame and could be effortlessly gathered by hand; even young children were able to pick them up off the ground and from under bushes. Bolton observed and testified of this miraculous provision, which became known as the Miracle of the Quail. Every man, woman, and child in the camp was able to eat freshly cooked quail for their meals, providing life-saving nourishment. For Curtis E. Bolton, witnessing this divine intervention served as a profound testament of God's watchful care. He and his family drew strength from this miracle as they subsequently journeyed across the plains, arriving safely in the Salt Lake Valley with an enduring testimony of the Lord's protective hand over His people.
