Bidamon, Lewis C.: Protector of the Mansion House (1840s)

Major Bidamon, though not a member of the Church, became a vital protector for Emma Smith and the remaining Saints in Nauvoo following the martyrdom. During the Battle of Nauvoo in 1846, he used his influence in the Illinois militia to advocate for the safety of the 'poor camp' and those left behind. His marriage to Emma in 1847 provided her with a measure of social stability and protection for the Smith family properties, including the Nauvoo House. His life stands as a witness of how the Lord uses many hands to preserve the legacy of the Restoration during times of extreme peril.
